New Years Day brings thoughts of renewal and resolutions to be made. But many of these well intentioned resolutions fail, many even before the first month is over.
I think it is due to the lack of giving enough thought to the goal setting process.
For us to have a honest chance to succeed, we must create S.M.A.R.T. goals.
First, they must be SPECIFIC. What exactly do you want? Asking for a new car is not enough if it does not suite your needs or it is in a color you hate to be seen in.
Second, they must be MEASURABLE. Many make weight loss their goal, but in my experience, using a scale is the worst way to measure your success. It is much easier use a measurement that you can immediately quantify like amount of food or how many CrossFit workouts you performed this week.
Third, they must be ATTAINABLE and Fourth, REALISTIC. Setting a goal that is neither of these things will only set you up for a cycle of guilt and self-loathing for not meeting your goal. Sometimes it is best to set many small goals and see how you accomplish them rather than set too large of a goal.
Lastly they must be TIMELY. I was once told by one of my coaches, “ A goal with out a deadline is not a goal at all.” All goals must have a clearly defined time frame including a target date or time assigned to it. This is a powerful concept that we use with most our CrossFit workouts, having a set time to complete it with a stopwatch running.
Use these principals when crafting your New Years Resolutions this year and see how much you will accomplish!
